8oz stale bread
4oz raisins (could use currants, mixed fruit, sultanas etc)
2oz brown sugar
2oz butter
 tsp mixed spice
1 egg
Milk

Pre-heat oven to 170 C / 325 F

Break bread into small pieces and soak in cold water for an hour or so. Drain and squeeze dry.
Place into a bowl, mash and add the dried fruit, sugar and mixed spice, and stir together well.
Add the egg and enough milk to make a loose mixture - (should just drop off a spoon, not be too stiff.)
Place into a greased baking tin and bake for about an hour or until slightly firm to the touch.

When done finish with a good shaking of sugar over the top and serve with lashings of proper custard....

I make this quite a lot for my son as we always have lots of stale bread to use up and he loves it ..I sometimes ( tongue in cheek )have a slice too !! I use Delia Smiths recipe from her old book from way back when and it 's basically the same as Nickmos but I soak the bread in milk ..then add two ounces of melted butter then all the other gubbins and the rind of an orange grated .When it's cold I dust it with icing sugar.Or we eat it hot with custard or cream.
It's a lovely old fashioned pudding for a cold winters day .
