Possibly Greman (picknick) but most probaly French in origin ( pique-nique) derived from 'piqueur' - to pick and originating toward the end of the 18th Century. It was originally used for the kind of meal to which all invited guests contributed some food, and the application to an outdoor meal did not emerge until later.
