I cooked with garlic last night and this morning the house is stinking! Apart from ventilating the place well, is there any way I can actually get rid of the smell (rather than masking it with scented candles)?

Why would you want to get rid of the smell - it's wonderful! Just enjoy and cook with garlic again tonight and tomorrow........
Get some Prices Chefs candles or tea lights mail order from lakeland plastics. They are wonderful for removing any unpleasant food smells. My husband hates the smell of fish cooking.Light up before cooking and leave on afterwards for a while. The candle comes in a tin but the new tealights are better in a way as one tea light will do the whole job.The smell is lovely.Wont solve your current problem but would in future.
Put a small pot of water on to boil - add some cinnamon and if you have some lemon or orange peels add them too. Let it boil and then simmer. Add more water as needed.
I think an Extractor Fan is a definite 'must have' item in a kitchen. Certainly to help remove the smell of fish; but as for garlic, the perfume is a perfect pommander.
