Nestle Condensed Milk

Hi - I am not totally sure this is the right catagory, so I will post it in a couple of others that seem to fit too.

Anyhows, my question is....Are Nestle the only ppl to make condensed milk? I am in the UK and as far as I know it is the only brand available. I also do not understand why there are no 'own brand' versions (Tesco, Sainsbury etc).

Any clues??

in the canaries there are different brands.
its used a lot here for coffees by the spanish.

for example a leche leche grande.

coffee in a tall glass with condensed milk at the bottom and coffee on top.
long spoon and you stir it up.

There is also a brand Fussells which you can get. There is some talk it is also Nestle's, but nothing on the Nestle site to lay claim on it... unlike the Carnation brand name.

Luna - I am not sure if you mean sweetened condensed milk or condensed as in evaporated milk like I posted earlier. Just in case:

Hi all.

Yeah Fussels got eaten by Nestle a few years ago now. Gotto love that corporate giant thing. They don't like to brag about all the companies they have consumed, then we would all 'know'!

Also, I do mean the sweetened condensed milk, not the old Carnation evaporated stuff.

Just looked up the Eaglebrand thing and their history etc. It would appear that they have NOTHING to do with Nestle. So that answers half my question (thanQ).

So I still need to find out why there are no generic tins of Condensed milk on the shelves in the UK. I think that is what puzzles me most given that EVERY other product (Tomato Ketchup etc) has more than one option in terms of manufacturer.

I have three non-Nestle branded/made tins of condensed milk here. Peak, Alaska and Grace brands. Sainsburys sells Grace, but not with the other condensed/evaporated milk etc, it is in with the caribbean foods. Peak and Alaska are readily available, at least in London, from cornershops/small grocers.

However, all condensed milks are not created equal. Using exactly the same other ingredients/pans/utensils Alaska and Grace behave very differently when making fudge. Alaska reaches 116C (soft ball) very quickly, but it is very difficult to get the same recipe made using Grace up to temperature.
