Why do smarties' lids have letters on them? It's really bewildering!

According to the Nestle (which owns the Rowntree Chocolate section), there is no real reason. It's a gimmick which people love. A spokesman in York said: "Letters on the lids have been around since the year dot and they are very much part of the product which people love. people have great fondness for the letters - some people like to collect them and make up names or words, but there is no real reason behind it."
