My grandmother always used to tell me to be grateful for the bread I get as when she was younger she used to put stale bread that was black in water to make it soft and then eat it.

Was it just a lie or does anyone else know of this procedure?

Never heard of the idea of putting black bread in water, but long ago I have heard that id bread or rolls were stale, then people would dip the roll in water and stick it in the oven for a minute or two.
So, you never know it might have been true!
I've eaten black bread in Russia - it wasn't stale, it's meant to be black. But I do freshen up a french loaf by sprinkling it with water and sticking it in the oven for a couple of minutes, like cruella says.
