I had a meal at a friends house and they served a dish I can't remember the name of. It was a circle of dough filled with mashed potato, spring onions & 1 other ingredient and then shaped rather like a cornish pastie. It was then boiled for 2 mins and then fried in butter. (My friends are Canadian and I'm sure they said it was originally a Ukranian recipe, but it's popular in Canada & the US. I can't contact them to ask as they've gone off camping somewhere). Does anyone know the dish and have the recipe please?
Probably Varenyky or Pirogies which they eat for special occasions . I think Christmas Eve. They use different fillings but basically cheese and onion . . http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pointe/5892 /Recipe2.html
Sometimes they make it with sweet fillings as well like prunes !.
Hi Jan. In a word...yes. I'm not a lover of stodgy or fried food but they were totally scrummy. The occasion was my friends birthday. She said they take a while to make but trust me, they are worth it.
