Try and put your hands on a bottle of Adlitzbeere/Elsbeer, an Austrian speciality available only from very specialist shops. it is made from the fruit of the wild service tree, which is noted for its wood, but only Austrians value its fruit. The last recorded use of it in the UK was in the 15th century. The trouble is the tree only comes into fruit when it is 15 years old, and when it does it produces a tiny crop on its brittle branches. The price of a bottle is well over 120. The lucky few who have tasted it say it has a taste of marzipan.
