The rule is quite simple, but very profound... if the dropped food is picked up within 5 seconds of landing on the floor (or other surface) it's perfectly safe to eat... why waste good food? Appears that a corrolary to the rule is that it really doesn't matter of what the food consists. However, Appendix 1A to the rule states clearly that "... such food must not have entered any mouth prior to be dropped..." Appendix 1B does caution that food dropped on the bathroom floor is exempt from the Rule and must comply with its sister Three Second Rule...
I would if my mastiff puppy gave me half a chance. Seems that he sits there just trying to mesmerise the food to drop on the floor. I remember being a new wife and I'd baked a tray of mince pies. I took them out of the oven without using oven gloves and dropped the lot. I rang my mum and asked her what to do and she said I should pick them up and put custard on them and husband would never know. She was right.
