This should explain it, 4get. I was going to try, but my year 10 science lesson has suddenly vanished from my memory. :o)
off top of my head they burn it and a calorie is a unit of energy needed to increase the temp of water or something,

Think its 1 degree per litre of water.

i remember setting fire to peanuts at school and then holding it under a beaker of water and measuring heat change.

Ok I just read that attachment and am now brain dead for rest of afternoon, has done my nut in. And I used up 225 calories just reading it :-)
