Tesco and beer sales

On a similar subject my local Tesco's used to sell Kozel and Budvar Czech beers. I used to buy a lot and on one social occasion (wedding anniversary) the manager criticised my wife for depleting his whole stock!! They have also disappeared from the shelves. A friend enquired why and was told there was no demand, yet the Kozel brand is almost certainly the most popular beer in my local Wetherspoons. Can anybody explain?

Kozel is cheap in wetherspoons but its average price in the shops. Decisions with regards to supermarkets are take at a higehr level, so it's possible that nationally Tesco's found that Kozel wasn't selling well and decided to replace the space on the shelf with something more profitable/popular.

Simple answer all the rubbish beers and lagers have multi million pound advertsing camapigns hence it all comes down to demand and profit. Shame as there are hundreds of great lagers 90%+ of the market however is dominated by crap tasteless lager and beer. Supermarket choice, I don't think so. Stella and Bud yuk

Thanks WoWo and The_Bald_Dr. Kozel is an excellent bottled lager (as is Staropramen also available in Wetherspoons) I've a friend who's complained so much about this issue and others, and that Tesco always write back to say they take his complaints seriously when they obviously don't, that they've arranged a meeting for him with their Customer Liaison Officer. He's not wildly optimistic

I'd agree with The_Bald_Dr also its about brand awareness which creates demand rather than a quality issue.

If it helps Tescos (at least the one in central Cambridge) have just started selling the rather tasty Baltika 3 (http://eng.baltika.ru/) which I was very partial to whilst in Russia. Makes a change from the usual supermarket pap...
