Well I do and I'm not dead yet :-)
I agree. If it looks and smells ok ,it is ok.just keep it as cool as possible or get a butter butler from lakeland(the homeware shop) which will keep it cool but spreadable
I m the only one in house that eats butter so a pack lasts me which puts me off keeping it on the side so i keep the block in the fridge but cut a chunk off in the morning and put it on a small plate covered with cling film to use that day

thanx...... we all eat it, but this particular time i bought one of the big ones, so it'll last longer, this was why i was curious, cutting a bit of for the day is a good idea though, thanks again
I only put mine in the fridge in the height of summer when it gets really soft at room temperature - a pack of butter lasts me up to a month and I'm still here!
If it has been in the fridge or it's too hard to spread easily I just zap it in the butter dish, in microwave for 5 seconds, then another 3-5 if still not soft enough. Although a small block will totally melt in a few seconds!
/Butter tastes and smells really nasty when it goes rancid. It has to be warm for quite a while for it to happen though!!
as long as you keep it in a dark cool cupboard, thats all i do.
I always keep my butter out of the fridge, never gone off yet.
