Recently a colleague discovered that the pre-packed sliced beef he purchased contained shellfish. Is this normal and why? It certainly means that I read labels now.

I recently read a book called 'not on the label' which gives an insight into what actually happens to processed foods and I was absolutely shocked to find that many meats are often injected with alot of water and chemicals and traces of other meats and fish. a scary situation especially when many people do not eat certain meats for religious purposes and may be ingesting them unawares. No, it's not normal yet it is what happens in modern day food processing mainly as a cost cutting excercise. So always read the label. Sadly some of the dodgy practice goingon may not even beincluded on the label.
Serves him right for buying pre-prepared food!
Buy beef from a proper butcher, where it will be treated properly, and with luck taken from a carcase which has been hung for more than a few days. Probably cheaper too, and they'll be able to tell you where it came from. Other meat too. If you must use a supermarket, go for Soil Association labelled stuff, which has been reared reasonably well.
Or get it from my own traditional breed cattle (but you may not be able to handle that much real beef flavour). And I can tell you what its name was...
