The only advice I can really give is to look at the ingredients. If any spreads have Hydrogenated Oils of any kind they are much worse for you than a bit of cholesterol, ie: butter. These oils are added to make them more spreadable and have been proved to cause cancers.
Butter is natural. It is also fat. As long as you don't eat pounds and spread it thinly it is a source of Vitamin D and A. Plus it tastes so much better than muckerly butterly.
Just look at the list of artificial ingredients in margarine and other butter substitutes - there's your answer. I don't buy other diet (low sugar/low fat) products for the same reason.

thank you to all of you that answered, its butter all the way for me and my fella, his cholestrol is up slightly and the nutritionist said change to alternative spread, I beg to differ. he has a healthy diet so we will just cut down the amount of butter. i now strongly believe this is the best way, fab answers from all and really helpful..
Tell your fella to get a simple cholesterol test at the docs if he hasn't already. I couldn't eat less cholesterol and fatty food if I tried, yet mine is borderline high! My Dad's family are all like this, so it may even be genetic.
