Ready to eat fruit has usually been allowed to ripen before picking - but has a shorter shelf life so is more expensive.
Unfortunately most fruit sold in supermarkets is picked too early so it will last longer. They say it will "ripen in the bowl" which is a load of rot - which is precisely what fruit starts to do when it is picked!

agree chrisrob, some of the fruit that supermarkets sell especially pears are like bullets, they never ripen!!!
You get what you pay for. Last week I bought some grapes in a supermarket that seemed a bargain. They were foul, ate a few and threw the rest away. If it seems a bargain, don't bother.

Dont agree there, the original price was 99p, i get some tremendous bargains, pity you cant taste before you buy lol!!!!
The pineapples here are rather tasteless.

When you pick them up, they have no smell and you are supposed to be able to smell the sweetness of the pineapple.

I think they pick them too young for importing!

Now the pineapples in Jamaica, ooh they were so juicy and sweet, I had many for my breakfast recently.

Even the bananas, they had a certain sweetness that we don't get in our bananas.
I buy my fruit and veg from a greengrocers but on the od occassion I have just need one thing I have nipped into Tesco on my way home as it is closer, and each time the stuff has been cr@p.

The carrots taste like plastic, the bananas are bland, the broccolli yellow by the next morning and their potatos start sprouting within one day!

I hate tesco.

Sadly we dont have a greengrocer here last one left a couple of years ago, so supermarket type shops are my only option!!!
I agree with you Natalie, I really don't know why people shop there,
thats a consequence of pc fair trade support,

pay extra and give preference to lazy growers who produce poor fruit etc,

natural market forces mean that premium priced products are premium quality,

if its cheap its for good reason,

if its fairtrade labelled its expensive without good reason.
