Simple, cheap recipes: 50p to 1 ?
15 Answers
In response to a subsidiary question from the original poster, I've just given some examples (over in 'Parenting') as to how I can knock up a quick, basic meal for not much more than (or even less than) 50p:

Being a pauper (and a natural skinflint anyway!), I'd appreciate any further suggestions that ABers might have to offer.

Can anyone come up with a cheap meal that is not cheap and nasty though? I mean, yeah, you can buy everything value (and I often do, although not everything) but what kind of quality are you getting with value sausages, for example?
I suggest lentil stew. Its ridiculously easy to make and delicious.
You will need in a large saucepan:
3 or 4 garlic cloves skin on, 1 small diced green pepper, 1 diced peeled potato, 1 diced onion, 3 tablespoons chopped tomatoes, half a chicken stock cube, 1 teaspoon paprika, 1 bayleaf, salt and pepper, 2 tablespoons olive oil, 2 glasses of water. Put everything in and simmer n medium heat for about an hour until lentils are soft.

Maybe Spicy Prawn Pasta?
Slice 250 grams of mushrooms and fry with 6-8 garlic cloves and 1 chopped dry chilli in olive oil for 5 mins, seasoning with salt and pepper.
Add 40 normal sized prawns (10 per person) and fry for 5 mins.
Boil 300g pasta and once al dente stir together with the rest.
It shouldnt be very expensive meal.

Regarding the Asda 2p sausage, you might be surprised:

Tesco is selling frozen wild salmon fillets at 10 for 8, they have been half price for a long time so 5 for 8 salmon fillets is excellent.

Hi Vibrasphere
Yes I agree with you. I bought a 700g pack of sainsburys value mushrooms the other day and they were absolutely fine. I always use value chopped tomatoes, wholemeal bread, milk, salmon fillets, toilet paper...there are some things however I wont touch like sausages, corned beef and Tesco value rice is horrible.

Corned beef hot pot for 4. Get 2 tins of corned beef and dice. Layer in a casserole dish with onions, carrots and any other veg you like. Top with sliced potato. Carry on layering and finish with potatoes. Add stock to almost cover, place in oven and cook ifor 1 hour. Remove lid and cook for another 20 - 30 minutes to brown potatoes on top.. Serve with some broccoli or cauliflower. Very filling and comforting on a cold day.

Now Chris, im surpised at you...
knowing that you also look at Martin Lewis's Money Saving Forum as I do, I'm surpised that you haven't seen the "50p a day" thread on there. It really is an eye opener what you can achieve with 50p for a meal.

Boil some cubed potatoes in water with a beef stock cube in , add some frozen peas etc... and a tin or two of stewing steak for a gorgeous hot pot. Can also be used with corned beef instead of stewing steak.
Basic pasta with sardines in tomato sauce or with tuna and sweetcorn or with soft cheese and cut up basic ham slices.
