Supermarket Bargains

In the supermarket, on the shelf were tins of Cadburys biscuits and the shelf above was crammed with tins of Foxes biscuits, both having labels on each shelf advertising each at half price - �3.49. As the Foxes brand had a higher weight, I took a tin. When I paid, I thought the bill was rather high for the amount of things I bought, checked the bill to find I was charged �8.99 for the biscuits. When I questioned this, it was found that another varity of Foxes biscuits were displayed with the half price tag and there were none of the half price ones to be seen. It seems a shelf packer just re-packed the shelf without taking the old price label off the shelf. How many people have been caught like this? They were both Foxes brand but with a different name on the tin. One would automatically think that dozens of tins in the space marked "half price - �3.49" would be the ones you wanted. Both would have been similar sizes. I asked for it to be exchanged for one for �3.49 but was told they had no more in stock. So I was refunded the �8.99, no apology, but they seemed annoyed to have been caught out.

Yes - it is extremely annoying. Somerfield are the worse for this - there offers are so vague as to be confusing.

Always check your receipt before you leave. If enough people complain and demand their back, things may improve

It used to be Tescos policy that if there was an error like this they would refund the entire amount on your receipt.

A workmate of mine got her entire weeks shopping free when she shopped on the day the offers were changing, and they obviously hadn't updated the shelves as quickly as they updated the tills

It happened to me when I bought some free range eggs recently in Morrisons. The 'bargain' price on the shelf display said one thing but the tiny labels on the boxes had a much higher price.

I insisted that they took the price marked on the shelf away, but I could tell they were very reluctant to do so! They probably put it straight back again when I left!

I actually watch the till display for every item when I shop, even if this delays me packing. (I then pack at my own pace before paying - and I don't care about others waiting in the queue!). I am sure supermarkets get quite a lot extra from people who don't check!

I hate it when this happens and it has happened to me many a times.

I just take everything back and demand my money back.

The number of times I've reported bad displays, why it was only the other day, Tesco was advertising spring rolls for half price, but when I got to the check out, it was the other ones which weren't even displayed. Pah!

elginred, with the store i used to work for if prices were increasing the shopfloor price had to be altered before the computer systems and if decreasing the computer was changed before the shopfloor. This usually meant most errors were avoided.

Im sure it probably happens in larger stores, especially when busy and staff and customers knock the labels etc.

always have a rough idea of what you bill will come to if you can.

i was shopping at morrisons 3 weeks ago and a shop assistant was putting a wine display up and put the price on the boxes of wine without opening any of the cases ( the sign said �4 each meaning �4 per bottle) so i picked up a case and went and paid for it, the checkout girl got confused and got her supervisor who told me it was per bottle to which i pointed out that there weren't any bottles just the cases and i wanted it for �4

the manager came and said it was a mistake and i pointed out tis the law that if they advertise something for a certain price thats how much they have to sell it for so i got a case of 8 bottles of jacobs creek wine for �4

its just a shame i dont like white wine so i'm going to give it to people at work as christmas presents

This particular store was Tesco. It is a brand new super store, the old store being knocked down. The old one were very lax in the running of things and always running out of basics. This new one has proved to be no better in many respects. In future I will take LoftyLottie's advice and take my time checking each item that goes through the till. If things do not improve, I will change supermarkets. There are enough competition around.

Well good for you danchip :o). However, you were very lucky.

The law in fact doesn't say that the shop has to sell at the price displayed. The price displayed is only an offer and they don't have to accept your offer. They were within there rights to not sell the wine to you.

My local co op has an excellent display at the checkout so that even I can clearly see how much is being charged as each item goes through the till.

Other supermarkets should follow that example

You are quite right, lottie, that the store can refuse to sell.

It doesn't alter the fact that to advertise one price and charge a higher price is illegal, and some practices are downright deceitful

You always have to be alert in the Supermarkets, you would think they are actually trying to fool the customer! You always have to read the small print etc! Recently Tescos had 4pk tins Tuna for half price, all displayed on the shelf, when I purchased mine I was charged full price as they said the offer only applied to the tuna in brine, but I did get it sorted! What bugs me as well is the amount of stale bread mixed in with fresh and the full price expected for it!!

hehe...it has been known to happen now & then. Many moons ago there was one particular product that was well underpriced (on the till) for quite a while...word got around & it suddenly became very popular! ;o)

Let's all face it - there are no real bargains at all in any of the large supermarkets. Clever, clever retailing, but they don't really give anything away!!

while studying at university i worked in my local ASDA, after being there a year my department manager put me through the management training scheme in which i was taught how to shop just buying the loss leaders, this was a great thing to learn as i still use it to this day
