As strange as this may sound I have a friend who thoroughly enjoys licking coal. Yes - the stuff you burn on fires. I am just curious enough to question WHY? Has anyone out there got the same taste and can explain the reason for this?

It's called Pica and is apparently quite common in pregnant women.

Years ago, when my mother was pregnant with one of my sisters, I remember her nibbling on the edges of the newspaper she was reading!

It's a common craving during pregnancy, and I think it is linked with iron deficiencies.
