Roast potatoes - grid or no grid?

I have a roasting dish with a metal "grid" that sits in it, I'm sure many people have a similar style of tray.

The question is, when making roasties, do I use the metal grid or not? My girlfriend and I had quite a heated discussion about it tonight!

No, that's only for meat.
No you dont need a metal grid your roasties should be immersed in some sort of fat!!!

In order for your roasties to actually turn brown, they need to be in contact with the oil in the tray. As the others have said, the tray is for meat, to lift it away from the tray and allow excess fat to drip off.

OK, OK, I thought basting them would be sufficient but obviously I'm wrong - no one tell her she's right!

My pennnance is a week of cooking and washing and cleaning and tidying, but since I do all that anyway that's no big deal - it the smug look on her face that gets me - told ya!!!!!

Anyway, thanks for all your advice!
No Grid

You need to heat the dish with goose fat then rough up the edges of the par boiled potatoes then sprinkle semolina on them
