can anyone tell me the origin of the name of the pub called "Nine Stringed Jack", found in the village of Theoden Bois in Essex

I'm very sorry, I mean the "SIXTEEN" Stringed Jack

The pub sign is a man about to be hanged. Perhaps it is a multiple gibbet, or perhaps the executioners nickname
