I'm making a '1' shaped birthday cake and I'm about to cover it in rolling icing for a smooth finish. Now, I'm NOT using marzipan under it, so do I need to cover the sponge in melted jam or anything to make the icing stick?

I am in middle of making OH's b'cake "-the best ever choc cake in the world" take 2 big bars of 70% choc and a pint of double cream and make myself vey sick scraping bowl. Have a lovely 1st birthday.( well not you obviously but the little one)
