Buttermilk

Hi,

I have looked in a couple of supermarkets for Buttermilk but cannot find it, anyone know where i can obtain this and also if there is an alternative product i could use?

if you live near a home bakery they should sell you it-from their own supply

WTF's a home bakery? And ""from their own supply?"" are we talking about buttermilk or drugs?

Agree, Tesco have it, also Waitrose. Alternative would be natural yoghurt mixed with a little milk. Great for soda bread and scones.

sasha, do you live in England or Ireland?? In Ireland it can be bought almost anywhere. But if you wanted it to use in baking - such as mentioned before, i.e., making soda bread, just let your ordinary milk go off for a day or so! If it is for soda bread making, you can use ordinary milk anyhow and I've even mixed it with a little yoghurt to obtain the same results!

beejay, are you juming threads also kid?? For me, I'd drink buttermilk till it came out me ears. Unfortunately the stuff you get now is all watery! Best buttermilk I've ever had in me life was in Omagh! Very thick & creamy!

Well I will, but your giving me a cop out here kid! Maybe my nearest 'Home Bakery' out-let, only sells the end product and does not bake in-house! Which, in fact, is the case here in A/town!

To make a subsitute for buttermilk, suitable for use in recipes, add about a tbs of lemon juice to a glass of milk and stir. Within a few minutes the milk should start to thicken.
