because they're designed by idiots. on environmental grounds i would like to see them strongly discouraged wherever possible. i realise there are certain situations where hygiene is impossible to control and they're necessary, but many pubs and restaurants use them when it would be perfectly possible to use a bottle.
Maybe its due to the fact that you think you can open them that you can't. I don't think they're designed like that for environmental reasons.

There's an art to everything dealing with ketchup. The manufacturers forget that humans have to open the dang things, not the machines that close them.

Here in America, for example, to pour ketchup from a bottle that's been upright for awhile, you have to hit the 47 (Heinz)...To open a ketchup packet: Shake the packet to settle the sauce at the bottom.  Using your finger nails, tear from the top, moving both hands in opposite directions.  While opening, keep as far away from your body in case it spits on your nice, clean, white shirt.
