Sweetcorn gathered popularity in the UK after World War II and is now grown extensively across southern England.
Also being 86,I can remember the first time(approx 1946) when I first tasted corn on the cob.I have a feeling it was imported by the US Military to keep their troops happy.
I also remember eating it with butter(lashings of) courtesy of an American GI,butter was in very short supply then,as was anything different in the veggie range,so it was most welcome.
I cannot remember Corn on the Cob from my childhood,BUT that doesn't mean it wasn't grown here, just that we didn't have (or possibly) afford it.

the first time i ever came across it was in a restaurant in conway in 1962. i was a child and was allowed to have it as a starter, being a very adventurous eater, while the rest of the family looked on in amazement. i don't remember it being readily available in shops until home freezers became the 'norm' which i reckon must have been late 60s/early70s, and you could buy bags of frozen ones. i don't remember fresh ones being in the shops at all before then, and in fact i think fresh ones have only been in the shops in relatively recent years.
interesting question though :)
