They are made from Urid flour (made from dried black urad lentils that have been skinned and split) apparently.

They are made from Urad dhal flour or lentil flour as already mentioned. They then add bicarbonate of soda, spices and it's made into a pliable dough which is then pressed/rolled out into a circular disc & dried.
