You're best to steer clear of chewy sweets and gum because it can get stuck really easily and doesn't all come out, and avoid fizzy drinks because they erode the glue that is holding the braces on.
Most foods are soft, so you don't really have to limit yourself too much, just be sensible and don't go straight into apples etc. Pasta, rice, potatoes, mince, will all be fine. if in doubt, ask your dentist.
PS, if you're in pain (teeth being moved etc,) soluble asprin rinsed around the mouth works a treat, and Bonjela helps too.
Try some of those liquid nutrition drinks like slim fast. They have very good nutritionaly value, they're liquid, and filling. If you're looking for something solid though try cherios or other cereals. I'm in my second stage of braces, (had them for 5 mothes 3 years ago, now I've had them for almost a year) and I've found that when They're really uncomfortable it helps to chew gum. I know they tell you not to, but my dad's a periodontist and told me that the gum does the braces no harm, and they only don't want you eating it because it might cause cavitys. Check with your orthodontist before you chew sugar free gum though, it's really not that bad!

As a vegetarian.. i ate alot of Rissoto (YUM!). it's soft enough to eat when you first get braces.. and it's a great veggie dish. Ratatouille is fine. Eat plenty of soups.. like potato and leek soup. pasta is easy enough on the teeth too. ummm... yeah within a couple of weeks you'll be eating everything normally again! you'll get to a point where you forget you're even wearing them! good luck with everything!
