Waffle irons

Hope you can help...
We have an old fashioned waffle iron, two metal plates on long handles. I get the idea that i need to heat up the metal but how?
Do i simply put the whole thing in the oven and try to carefully put it in and out with the batter? Sounds a bit difficult with oven gloves. Grill it?
Please help - have had these ages and am on the verge of throwing out.

I had one of these but it has long vanished. Where did you get yours or did you inherit it?

sorry - they were my mother's for years and even she nearly threw them out!
Live in scotland in a pickle, but otherwise....!
