Is it safe to lick the spoon?

Do you/let your kids lick the spoon from a cake mixture bowl?

I think I did as a child but I don't know if you should because of the raw eggs?! The whole raw egg/salmonella thing confuses me to be honest.

What are the chances of getting ill?

my two love to lick the spoon / bowl after making cakes.
I always did it too and even now will pinch a bit lol

considering fresh mayonaise and things like homemade mousse are made with raw eggs there cant be too high a risk. Obviously those with a lowered immunity or pregnant women should avoid raw eggs just in case.

I quite often whisk a raw egg into a glass of milk when I go running.

Yes I do eat mayo but the eggs are pasturised (sp?) aren't they?

It's just that say, if I was making scambled eggs and got some on my hands, I'd wash my hands straight away with antibacterial handwash, I wouldn't want to lick it off.

I think we mollycoddle kids far too much these days. They need a few germs & bugs to build up a good immune system.

When I was a kid, I used to eat raw sausagement For Funks Sake. (mind you, I had worms for 14 years - which is why I was so thin.....)

I agree to some extent Salla but food poisoning is different to a few germs, that's why I thought I'd better check.

I think a lot has to do with time.

Bacteria needs food, warmth and time too grow.

If you have just made the cake mix, it is probably safe.

If the bowl has been standing in the warm kitchen for a while, then it is more risky.

I would have thought that it would be extremely rare to contract Salmonella from the situation as described.

Oh! by the way, many people on AB have stated that we are too cleanliness conscious and that we should expose ourselves to more organisms for for own benefit of health.
