one calorie is the amount of energy that is needed to warm 1cc of water through 1 degree of heat. I think they burn it in a sealed chamber

We did it in Science at school, we burnt a piece of bread in a sealed chamber to see how many calories were in a slice of bread. 12 if i can remember rightly
