..or Redbush,as it is also known. Anybody try it?...and did it live up to how it's described here- "The flavour of rooibos tea is often described as being naturally sweet (without sugar added) and slightly nutty." (wiki)
It didn't for me...I tried it yesterday, and I can only describe as tasting like an 'off' medicine,or the way kerosene smells........very off putting.
But-the one I tried was Tetley...would that make a difference?
I tried Tick Tock which is one of the original makes. I didn't find it sweet. Mma Makutsi in No.1 Ladies Detective Agency thinks it smells of mouse droppings and i agree :-)
Haven't tried Tetley's. Twinings is good - the pure one http://i52.tinypic.com/x6efxs.jpg ..but I can see where it might be an acquired taste. Try not to think of it as tea - cos strictly speaking it isn't:) I like it a lot (but then I am "of traditional build" like Mma Ramotswe, maybe that helps ha ha) and it doesn't make me get up and go to the loo in the middle of the night. I sometimes use it as a sauce for fruit salad along with some sweetener, but I prefer to use the pure kind and add sweetener myself. The pre-flavoured ones are too sweet.
must give it a go. at the moment i'm into twinings cranberry and sanguinello orange tea bags, and asda blackcurrant, so maybe a tea that's a cross between off medicine/odour of kerosene/mouse droppings/fruit salad sauce would do it for me ;)
(no.1 ladies detective agency series totally lived up to my vision of the books incidentally, wish they'd do some more episodes).
Desmond Tutu: "The man popularly described as "South Africa's conscience" said in July, when he announced his imminent retirement, that he had been spending too much time at airports and in hotels. "The time has now come to slow down, to sip Rooibos tea with my beloved wife in the afternoons, to watch cricket,-------"
Well....I drink a fair amount of herbal and fruit teas (tucking into wild fennel as I type)...so I thought rooibos would be something I'd like. I may try your recommended brand,swede....my mind is not totally closed to it-yet.....lol
I am fond of fruit teas and also super strong mint (black mint teabags from waitrose...two bags to the cup, infuse for 5 mins)....haven't tried fennel but can't do sage or chamomile.
I drink Tick Tock and think it tastes a bit spicy - I think of it as Christmassy Tea as it reminds me of cinnamon! They have just started doing a mix of Rooibos and Green tea which is nice and delicate.
Lidl do a lovely Orange Rooibus tea .Our Lidl does't appear to stock it anymore but if you have one in your area they may have some . The brand is Lord Nelson .
