I've tried making a Madeira cake this morning, but it hasn't risen at all. The cake is basically the same height as the mixture was when I put it in the oven. What did I do wrong? I've just eaten some and it tastes fine and is spongey, just very flat!

I whisked the butter and sugar together using an electric whisk, then beat in the eggs by hand. Then folded in the self raising flour by hand. I didn't open the door whilst it was cooking.

Any ideas?

I often add some bi-carb to the mix which helps it rise better.
Sounds like there wasnt enough air going into it. When you added the eggs did you add a spoonful of flour with each egg.?
My wife's suggestion: perhaps your oven wasn't hot enough when you put the cake in.

Thanks for your replies. Lilacben, I added a tablespoon of flour with the last egg which is what the recipe said. Do you think I should add a spoonful with each egg?

I'm going to try again later in the week, so I'll try all your suggestions and see what happens.

Thanks
Oven temp may be the problem or over beating the eggs

The oven was on 180.
Sorry being so long before I answer. I always put in egg and flour until egg all gone then add the rest of the flour. Try using your mixer to add the egss/flour.
Put into a preheated oven, Good luck Brenda
