Wasn't Kunzle a brand name? I found this http://realfood.tesco.com/recipes/cakes-based-on-the-original-kunzle-cakes-214.html

Thanks,Robinia- I even got the spelling wrong. Clever you for finding it, we were talking about them last night so I thought I'd have a go- nothing else happening in the kitchen this week!!
Good luck. I think I'd be tempted to eat the chocolate, sponge fingers and strawberries long before they got anywhere near a cake case :)
I don't think you need a recipe. You make chocolate shells. bake plain sponge and put a a layer in the bottom, brush with apricot jam, then fill with buttercream and decorate as per the photo here

Thanks Woofgang, I couldn't remember what they looked or tasted like but for the spirit of Christmas past I'll give it a go, suppose I could add sherry to the sponge too
no, don't do that, they need to be dry to hold together, beat booze into the buttercream instead.
Ooh, kunzle cakes! My favourites were the orange ones. Would the recipe really taste as good as the originals?
well i don't think the tesco recipe would, but if you experimented you might achieve somthing good
