Chop onions and steak to desired size, brown in a little oil - stew in stock.

As a useless male can anyone tell me if I have to brown my
stewing steak before i put it in the slow cooker?

I take it i start things on high & then reduce to medium?
When do i put in wine/water?

I can chop the onions & I bought a package of casserole vegetables.
It is getting the right order of things I want to get right as it is
my first use of the slow cooker I got as a present.
