I'm browsing through recipes, and a lot have black pepper in them. One of my guests REALLY doesn't like black pepper so I steer away from recipes containing it, but could I substitute it with something suitable else. Obviously it would give a different taste but I don't want to make it taste really weird.

yep, i'd just leave it out too and not substitute anything else.

...but that's difficult if you're making a casserole or some other recipes. I have done that with individual tartets but it's not so easy with other food. I was wondering if could use another spice in place of black pepper - for instance would white pepper be as tasty.Thank you anyway.
You could make a casserole unseasoned with pepper then near to the end of cooking time spoon a portion into another ovenproof dish, season the rest and return both lots to the oven for the last 30 mins or so.

Genius!!! Thank you.
What is it about black pepper your friend doesn't like?
Once it is in the dish you can hardly tell it's there. It ends up as a back ground flavour.

Hi angiealf, I wondered that myself but she says she can taste it, and I would HATE to think that she couldn't and put it in and spoil the meal for her. I only see them once a year so it's not THAT much hassle, but I do know what you mean.
In that case, what I would do is leave it out completely. serve the dish as usual and let your guests add pepper at the table to their tastes.
Y eat with fussy people - lifes too short! Go to a restaurant where all have their own choices - and pay their way!
I think that when we really don't like a particular taste it's easier to spot, however well disguised. My oldest son hated white pepper & I tested him by omitting/adding a tiny amount to something...he knew which one the pepper was in straight away!
I'd do what mortatube suggested.
