Royal Icing gone wrong!

I recently made egg-free royal icing (icing sugar, lemon juice and glycerine) to decorate cookies with. I used gel colouring and they looked great when I left them to dry overnight. However, in the morning little patches of white appeared in the icing and now, after a couple of days, it's gotten worse. Can anyone tell me what what wrong?
