Jam Roly Poly

Jam roly poly is an old favourite; this traditional English school lunch pudding is perfect cheering up food. Jam roly poly is steamed suet pastry filled with generous lashings of jam; it is wonderful served with hot thick custard.
Jam roly poly is a great dessert that your whole family can enjoy. It is a dessert that children love the look of as well as the taste and adults often find nostalgic and can’t help but smile.
Ingredients
- 220g self-raising flour
- 110g suet
- A pinch of salt
- 200g raspberry jam
- 1 egg, beaten
- Caster sugar for dusting
Method
- Mix the suet, flour and salt in a bowl.
- Add the egg and stir in well.
- Gradually add a little water at a time until a dough forms.
- On a floured surface, roll the dough out into a rectangle about 8mm thick.
- Heat up the jam in a microwave; brush the jam onto the rectangle leaving a border round the sides.
- Roll the rectangle from a short side.
- Wrap the jam roly poly in baking paper, twisting the ends tightly.
- Place in a steamer and cook for 1 ½ to 2 hours, until the roly poly is firm.
- Serve with custard and ice cream.
