Kil, Killy. A Gaelic word meaning a church. Famous examples include Kildare (Cill Dara) meaning 'the second church', Kilkenny. The Shankill area of Belfast is Gaelic for 'old church'.
The correct spelling of the Irish Gaelic word for church is cuil. The version "kil" as use in the names Kilkenny and Kildare is the anglicised version of the word. For example, "Kilkenny" is the anglicised version of the name of the town. Cuil Chainnigh is the Gaelic spelling and means "Church of Cainnech". "Cainnech" is a name, and refers to Saint Cainnech of Aghaboe (515/16–600), also known as Saint Canice in Ireland.
The slang term Killy is not known to me (I am Irish and live in Ireland) and I have never heard it used. However, I am very familiar with the slang term Cully, which means a gullible person or someone easily duped.
So if you are playing cards, and someone calls you a Cully, they are suggesting you are easily fooled.
I don't know that meaning, ringlet. For me, a "cully" is a mate, a pal, a decent bloke.
It might be a regional difference, JimF. Round where I live, even different towns have different meanings for the same word.
