Oblivion - lost skeletal hand??

Hi I've just done most of the haunted house quest and i have to put the skeletal hand in place but i have not got it! When i look back at the quest it says ' i found a skeletal hand and a piece of paper'. But the hand is not there! I cant have put it down cos you cant remove quest items and ive looked all over the house. Can anyone help????
