can i save music on my xbox 360 harddrive from a mp3 player or do i have to burn it on a cd and rip it on to the 360?

you should be able to plug it in to the 360's usb port and off you go !

no you cant
you can play music from a portable device linked to the usb port as mattk suggests but cannot save to your 360 drive in this way
it is also possible to stream musically from a wireless enabled computer however again you cannot save this to your 360
you have to rip from a cd
