x box live for 1st gen x box (not 360)

Hi we have a standard x box and was wondering if it is easy to get the Live features or is this really tailored to the 360? Would I need to get extra hardware to support it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I need to sort this out by later today for a birthday!

you need broadband
may need to contact your broadband supplier
access to xbox live which requires setting up an account - can be done via the xbox dashboard - cost �40 approx
