Games for Nintendo

My 7year old grandson is getting a Nintendo DS lite for christmas, and Im buying him a couple of games for it. My query is about the age reccomended on the front of the games. If it says 7plus or 12 plus, does this refer to the difficulty of the game, or does it refer to the contents, such as shooting and killing.
He loves pirates, so I was thinking of getting Pirates of the Caribbean.
Would it be suitable for a seven year old.
He has only played a few games with his friends.

The grading on the front refers to the content. For example, a chess game I have is rated 3+ but I have yet to meet a 3 year old who would find it fun.

Mario Kart DS is fantastic esp. if you have another DS as you can race each other as well as the com players. Can play with just one cart.
Mario Party DS is just a complete blast too
Nintendogs esp. if he likes dogs / pets (don't get The Sims 2 Pets almost the same but not as good). Multiplayer neeeds two carts.
Mario & Luigi Partners in time.
Animal Crossing build your own little world with visitors coming each day to bring gifts and extras (multi player needs 2 carts)
New Super Mario Bros, multiplayer one cart.
42 All Time Classics rated 12 as it has gambling games such as poker and 21 but has plenty of classic card games too like old maid as well as bowling darts etc. Multiplayer one cart. Is this enough?

the age mentioned on the box indicates the presence of violence and other mature themes in the game.

"Pirates of the Caribbean" ??
Hey, why not buy him a good game instead ?
Good games are the same price as junk games, you know.

"Pirates of the carribean" is not even in the top 100 best games available on DS!
