XBox Live query

If you look at most Xbox 360 games it says that to play live you have to pay a membership fee. But yesterday I created a gamertag and was able to play any game live, including GTA 4 and others alike?

Is the membership just for downloads or what??

there are two levels of membership. Silver and Gold.

When you set up a free silver account they give you one months free access to the full gold service. This is why you can play online.

A basic silver account will not allow full online access.
