What router do you have? Is it a wireless connection to the router or is it via cable?
Question Author
It is via a cable that is connected to the modem
Go to your router settings on your PC and check the UPnP settings are enabled
do you run a firewall on your pc? that sometimes forces ours to strict.

I won't butt in, cheekychick get the hump if I do LOL

But you need to say what make your broadband router is
Question Author
How thick am I it a talk talk one I have just had a look on control panel and it says this

Agere systems PCI soft modem

There are no details on the modem itself
that's not your broadband router, the router is the box that you plug your phone line into and the one that the cable from the Xbox is plugged into
Question Author
yep its a talk talk one - its has got lights and things on it - both phone and xbox cable go into it and I cant go on line myself if my sons on his xbox and it has got LAN USB ACT LINK and a power light - I think I must be thick lol
oh right, just noticed yo said there are no details on the "box" itself

OK type click here http://192.168.1.1

That should open the setup page for your router. if it asks for login details try

user: admin
password: password

if that gets you into the admin screen for your router then have a browse about the menus for UPnP and turn it on.

apply and save settings and the Xbox should then be able to tell the router what to do to make it work automatically.

I cant go on line myself if my sons on his xbox

You should be able to... how is your computer connected to the "box with the lights and things"
Question Author
It is telling me that I am not authorised.

I'd like to say thanks for all your help with this
Try user name - Admin
and for the password try 1234
or username and password both as admin
Question Author
Many thanks again - I managed to enable it but it still wont work -- aaahhhhh
By the sound of it and follow some more looking into it by myself and CheekyChick it looks like you talk talk modem is in fact a one port router... Which is a really really daft concept!!

my advice would be to invest about 40quid in getting yourself a proper broadband router and replacing your current modem with that. Then you would also be able to use your computer on the net at the same time as your son wants to play on Xbox live.

I'd recommend one of these...
