My personal favorite was Final Fantasy XI.
Although its hard its much more rewarding and fun in my opinion. Plus its great to play as TaruTaru :D
As for the downloading thing. If you buy any MMORPG on the install process, they need you to update it with patches and stuff. So this takes a few hours or more for any of the MMORPGs that ive played.

http://www.free-mmorpg-games.com/ has a list of free MMORPG games. You can view games by client download size as well.
Personally I have been playing Fiesta and would recommend that you try it.

http://mmorpg.co.uk also has a massive selection of fantasy mmorpgs. I'm personally playing (and loving) Tales of Fantasy and Atlantica online. If you don't want to download a client though there are loads of games on the site that you can just play in your browser.
Good luck! :)
