World of Warcraft/Final Fantasy Online - there's quests to do, but no compulsion to do them - you can wander around doing nothing should you so desire.

Second Life - do what you want

The problem with WOW and FFXI Online is that they both have monthly fees to pay. I play FFXI and have two accounts that I pay for,it costs me around 26.00 per month for both accounts with 5 characters on my own account and 7 on my fiance's. That is all on top of the initial cost of buying the game and expansion packs.
In WoW and I should imagine FF is the same, there's only so much area you can potter around in as a level one and not get eaten, squashed, pummelled or beaten to death by some kind of monster or beasty ;-)

There is something called Runescape that the nipper plays on a fair bit. Although you have to pay to unlock certain features you seem to get a fair bit for free.
Yeah there's that Booldawg, but the problem with Runescape and WoW and most RPG games is that in order to move around you're propelled to do quests in order to increase in levels etc.

Other than just plain fantasy stuff like Second Life, I really can't think of an online game where you do nothing- that's the whole point of them being a game, you do things in them to keep you entertained etc.
FFXI is the same in respect of the monsters that will munch you,the level one stuff is found outside the gates of the 3 main cities in the game, this is where you would probably gain the first 5 levels of your character, then you move further away from the cities as you go.You can forma party of 6 characters with your in-game friends to make the fights easier. There are 20 job types to choose from(some have to be unlocked at level 30) and many missions and quests to do,there are also hobbies and crafts that your character can do as well.

There is a link to a 14 day free trial on the official FFXI website:

This is the wikipedia site with lots of info:

pmsl @ daffy determined to aquire some converts ;-)

I still think joeisgreat is after a game where you do nothing at all other than amble about in it rather than a free or cheap game.

I could be wrong though (I usually am!)

I can't understand anyone wanting to play a 'game' that doesn't require any thought and effort B00! I prefer a challenge,not a boring wander around a fantasy town/area doing nothing,that isn't a game.
Me neither Daffy, why I'm a WoW addict ;-) (shut it MrK!), but joeisgreat does say "do whatever you want", which I assumed he just wanted to potter from place to place without doin' owt.

Unless he means you aren't pushed towards doing quests in order to progress through the levels.....

If that's the case, as much as I love WoW, I wouldn't recommend it for getting to high levels by just killing mobs (and not questing) you'll be in your dotage and collecting your pension before you get to a decent level.
Theres guild wars, oblivion, im not sure how much the 2 are and if they require a monthly fee
Hi b00,

No surprise to see you commenting on WoW then :)
