Does anyone know if the joysticks for older computers like Amstrad, Commodore, Amiga etc. were all intercompatible? I've got an old Amstrad CPC464 lying about but no joystick and I'm just wondering do I need to buy one specifically for it.

They are almost certainly not compatible. Getting a replacement might also be difficult and i suspect ebay might be your best bet. Good luck.
I believe your machine uses the old 9-pin joystick port, this was quite common in it's time and quite a few systems used this eg - Atari ST, Commodore Amiga, MSX, Master System, Megadrive amongst others. they should be interchangeable to an extent, I managed to use a Sega Megadrive on all the systems mentioned albiet with one button function. So any 9-pin joystick should work.
