It depends what you are looking for. The PSP is more versatile as you can watch movies on it as well as play games. The games tend to be more 'male oriented' with a lot of sports, fighting and racing games. Because it uses disks I find they can slow down gameplay in some games (Sims pets takes ages to load when changing location?) You can also store music and photos on it. The DS is more focussed on gaming and I think is a fab console. I am totally hooked on Animal Crossing at the moment - it's so easy to use with the touch screen. The game choices are more varied and would probably suit younger age groups (although I am 38!). Although I am greedy and have both if I had to choose one I'd go for the DS.
Agree with birdwoman, it depends who it is for, if its for a female of any age then the DS everytime.

DS is a better games machine and cost a lot less, I've got a DS and its great.

Helps if you like Nintendo type games.

I would go for the DS every time
See i am a psp man. I got one for christmas and havent put it down since. i dont listen to music on it as much as i could but the fact that i can watch umd movies on it is great. There is a wide range of games to. i also have just got a ds and i cant say anything bad about it. i Would recommend that if its for a male between 13 to adult then psp if its for a girl 10 to adult then DS. Without sounding to sexist i thats just my opion based on the games available for both consoles. hope that helps.
I have both and im a girl. I love the puzzle games on PSP like Mercury, Lumines and also micromachines. Its good when your going away for the weekend with the movies and music. It does have more 'boyish games' like Grand Theft Auto and Burnout.

Now, the DS. i got one for Xmas and i love it. The touch screen just adds another dimension to the games. the brain train ones are great as are the marios etc.

i play the ds more but only because i got the psp when it first came out and the ds is still a novelty. it depends what kind of games you like best really.

This is very similar to the whole PS3 vs Wii argument;

The PS3/PSP has better graphics but doesn't offer anything new and is more expensive. It is targeted at the 13+ males.

The DS/Wii doesn't have very impressive graphics but offers something entirely new (wiimote and touch screen) and is cheaper. It is targetted at everyone really, but I can see why it would be less attractive to 13+ males.

I would have to say DS, despite being a 16 year old male.
I have both, had them since lauch day. I'd say DS, as so far i havent seen anything that made me want to play the psp, in fact its hardly been used since i got it. I got that with the ridge racer and wipeout games, and tbh they're a bit tedius now.

GO fo DS you'll be able to play mario 64 on the bog.
That's quite hard but D.S.......DEFINITLEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sold my psp to get a ds - havent looked back since
Just to add my perspective. The whole point of both is mobile gaming, I have had both and the PSP is too bulky to be carried around in a pocket. It was OK if I had a bag but not practical to carry it around. The DS on the other hand is small enough to pop in a standard size pocket without too much trouble.

This is also true for battery life (the big colour screen on the PSP drains it big time) and also games, the UMD format is much bigger than the tiny DS games and also more likely to get scratched if you dont have them in a case (which again ads to the bulk). The other thing on that is that the PSP screen is exposed so you need to have an additional screen protector so again adding to the bulk.

PSP is good but my preference would be a DS and a Portable DVD player if you want gaming and film watching capability.
