the user bisquit is obviously not a family historian and would not be capable of a pertinent reply to your post.

whats difficult about tracing your family as i found out was that many families called their sons same name as father, so you are looking for father john smith, and son john smith and so forth, it can be a needle in a haystack. also what we class as womens name like Vivien, were also used for men, one ancestor i came across was listed on death certificate with scavenger as occupation. which rather threw me.
I haven't been able to continue on for lack of funds, because all these sites costs, plus census records, but its good fun all the same. Love programmes like who do you think you are.

em when you encounter issues like that, where you have common surnames coupled with common overused Chrtistian names, you turn to the distaff side to establish that you have the right couple through marriages and baptisms, then you look at the siblings, occupations and location to identify the correct family group. This does work, and you can eliminate possibles until you have the correct one. I always fully research siblings on every line and this invariably helps to identify and verify my research.
I use the ancestry.co.uk pay monthly option which I vary depending on my finances, the fees start from £10.95 a month for the essentials option and £12.95 for the premium, i am paying £18.95 a month at the moment for the worldwide and I don't really need it, the £12.95 would do. You can cancel it at any time if you think you will not need the site.

Dotty i did use one, but finances were not going to stretch to keep it up, at least not for now. I could check in our parish church as my gran was married there, and in the local council for records. Most of the family seemed to have lived in the same area, but it goes back a long way, and offshoots to Ireland.
