On the 1911 census Martin Hewitt Clark born 1852 South Owersby, Lincolnshire he is married to Margaret (Clark) born 1863 Rafford, Morayshire. It says they have been married for 29 years so that puts the marriage about 1882 and they have 2 living children. I would like to find her surname, but if there is any other information, even better. Iv checked and re-checked ancestry and Free BMD but have had no luck so am wondering if they got married in Scotland. Is there anyone here who has access to Scotland’s marriage records? Could you help it would be much appreciated?

Sorry I've looked on scotlandspeople and can't find anything.
I can only find his baptism in 1852 and his 1881 entry where he is married aged 29 but there is no wife, only a son george h clark aged 3 born nettleton lincolnshire, though this may not be your martin, he;s born owersby and a farm bailiff the birth of george is on the igi as 1878 nettleham lincoln and lists parents as martin hewitt clark and margaret. that means that they were together before the 1881 census and having children in the late 1870s, though this might not be the same margaret, and where she is on the 1881 i don't yet know, martin's brother richard is with him on the 1881
there is a margaret gordon born 4th july 1865 in rafford parents peter gordon and euphemia ferguson, could that be her?
Martin Hewitt Clarke married Margaret Robertson in Caistor 1881 Q3 7a 1081.
this is a margaret robertson born scotland 1861 living in the village of rothwell where martin also lived in 1881.

Thank you very much. I have had a quick read and will now look through my tree and digest. I really have no idea about Margaret at all, the Scotland reference was a bit of a surprise, but Rothwell Lincs sound very plausible. I have 2 Elizabeth Clark's on my tree (one born 1857 in Owersby Lincs. the other 1779 born Krikby cum Osgodby Lincs.) so am pretty sure that this Elizabeth is not one of mine, but as I have learnt I discount nothing because she may end up being related somehow! as a third of my tree is from Yorkshire. Once again thank you, I will let you know if the information is correct.
Are you not going to get a copy of the marriage certificate?

Unfortunately I am on benefits at the moment so can’t really afford it. I have found another marriage for Martin Clark in 1873 registered Jul-Sep in Caistor to Betsey Jane Horton (or possibly Mary Anne Mumby). I haven't been able to find a death record for either so I have to assume that if it was Martin Hewitt Clark either one of them married they got divorced or he was a bigamist, as he defiantly married Margaret Robinson in 1881, this tallies up with the information on the 1911 census.
there is evidence so far that martin had been married prior to marrying margaret. how many children did he have with margaret as the child george is 3 in 1881. it may have been that there never was a first marriage, my ancestors are from the same area and there were many mysteries surrounding them which only managed to be resolved when later census returns were released. my great great grandfather had married in coningsby lincolnshire in 1873 and they had a daughter, but in 1877 when he then had my great grandfather, he was with another woman living in doncaster as man and wife and his legal wife was still in lincolnshire, she died in june 1877 and my great grandfather was born in november the same year. the daughter born 1873 was brought up by her maternal family and I don't think there was ever any contact with her father again. he went on to have 11 children with his common law wife and they lived together as man and wife for nearly 50 years. when the 1911 census was released, emma, my great great grandmother, did not put how many years she had been married but william, my great great grandfather is so far untraceable on the 1911 and he didn't die until 1915, legally their children were never legitamised as there is no record of any marriage, but the daughter went on to marry an army major from a wealthy family and travelled the world, her 11 half brothers and sisters lived and died in todmorden. don't rely on the official records, people were secretive.
