I have realised that I know hardly ANYTHING about my father's family whereas my cousin has spent the last 20 years researching my mother's side and has gone back to @ 1540. Nice unusual surname of Mobberley though.

Anyway I just thought I'd have a browse at a free site first and I THINK I've found my father, but can't find my grand-father. It doesn't help that I don't know his name!

My father was James Frank Carr DOB 16/3/1921 and THINK his mother was called Elsie. Can any of you give me info on my grandfather please. Also if I join an Ancestry site, which one do you recommend. Thank you:-)

Elsie H Matley married George H Carr Ashton district Cheshire Q3 1920 ref 8d 1280, their son James F Carr registered Ashton Q1 1921 ref 8d 907 and i think he was an only child.

your best bet if you are not sure how much research you will have time to do is to opt for the monthly £10.95 which you can cancel at any time and re-instate at any time and so you don't feel you have laid out alot and are not using the site.

it was Elsie Holland Matley and she is 14 on the 1911 census, her father was Frank and her mother Betsey -ann, all born Ashton-under-lyne, she had an older sister Elizabeth aged 19 in 1911.

If you honestly don't mind having another look for me, I'd appreciate it. I was always led to believe my grandfather was a wrestler! I very vaguely remember2 old aunts as well. Jessie and ALice. Again, not much help I know. Thank you SO very much.

the reference numbers are from the General Register Office index and denote the volume and page number for the entries, it is that reference you need to order any certificates, but at this point you don't need any as you ahve his parents and i think they are on the 1911 anyway,

George's mother Margaret was born in Newark, Notts and his father was born Dukinfield, James Carr married Margaret Hoban at Ashton Q4 8d 664, (ancestry have not transcribed Margaret's entry on the original index, only the entry for James but i went into the original view and found her.)

James Carr's parents were John (b1829) and Ann Andrew b 1829, also from Dukinfield. John was killed in the Astley Deep pit disater in 1874,

Oh no Please do Dotty. I'm finding it rather emotional; so long as you don't mind. I HONESTLY knew nothing about my father's family. My Mum married my Dad but he already had other children that my Mum knew NOTHING about! Once again, thank you SO SO much.

ok , Margaret Hoban born Newark Notts in 1868 daughter of Henry Hoban, b 1830 in London, he was a house painter in 1871, Margaret's brother George Albert hoban moved up to Dukinfield with Margaret and their widowed mother Sarah Ann (she was born Newark 1851) sometime before Margaret's marriage to James Carr in the early 1890s, in 1911 Sarah Ann, Margaret's mother, is still alive aged but a patient in the Ashton workhouse infirmary.

Henry Hoban married Q4 1869 in Newark district but ancestry have not undexed his spouse, so no surname for her yet.

I think she was Sarah Ann Brown and ancestry have mistranscribed the reference, as Sarah Ann Brown married in Q4 1869 newark ref 7b 593 and henry hoban married Q4 1869 newark ref 7b 594, but, on the ancestry index there is only one male on henry's page but 2 females and 1 male on the page sarah is on, so , looking at the original image of the index,.....yes, ancestry have mis-transcribed the page number as on the original image it is 593, and so sarah ann was sarah ann brown, hunch worked!

Henry Hoban had been married before to a Margaret Rose, they were married on the 1851 census living in newark with margaret's mother and father, Henry was only 19 and margaret was 17, he's transcribed as henery hobard. I think that Henry and Margaret had twin girls, Catherine and Sarah in spring 1859 but both babies died within a couple of months.
